Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders, affecting between 3% and 5% of children. Despite its prevalence, there is still a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about ADHD. This can be especially true when it comes to the fears and concerns that parents may have about their child’s diagnosis.
In this article, we will talk about everything you need to know about ADHD, from its facts and common misconceptions to the fears people with ADHD experience and the people around them.
Facts You Need to Know About ADHD
Here are 3 facts that you need to know about ADHD:
1. ADHD has medications available:
There are actually five medications available for ADHD: Methylphenidate, Lisdexamfetamine, Dexamfetamine, Atomoxetine, and Guanfacine. Most of the time, adults that are diagnosed with ADHD are prescribed by doctors with these medications. But of course, these are still not enough. Emotional support is still needed along with these.
2. High energy does not equate with ADHD:
ADHD’s signs are not all about high energy. There are different kinds of manifestations of ADHD. Some are quiet because, in their minds, they are already in their own world. There are also some who have no energy to get out of bed. Well, where’s the high energy there, right?
3. People with ADHD have trouble paying attention to the “right” things:
Yes. They do have trouble paying attention, but to the “right” things only. ADHD people can spend hours reading something they love or playing with calming toys for them such as a stress ball, fidget toys, or their sensory necklace, but if you’re going to ask them to focus their attention on a specific task which they are not interested in in the first place, then this is where they are going to have a hard time.
Common Misunderstandings about ADHD

1. ADHD is simply a matter of being hyperactive or impulsive:
The reality is that ADHD is a real, neurological condition that affects millions of people worldwide. ADHD is NOT simply a matter of being hyperactive or impulsive. It is a complex condition that can cause a variety of symptoms, including problems with focus, concentration, and impulsivity.

Fears can’t be avoided, especially from the parents. What more, if you are parenting a child with ADHD?
1. Medication is the only key for ADHD:
One of the most common fears parents have is that their child will be medicated for ADHD. While medication can be an effective treatment for ADHD’s symptoms, it is not the only option. In fact, many children with ADHD are able to effectively manage their symptoms with behavioral therapy and other non-medication treatments.
2. People with ADHD will never succeed in life:
Another common fear is that a child with ADHD will never be able to succeed in school or in life. This is simply not true. With the right support and accommodations, children with ADHD can be successful in school and go on to lead happy and productive lives.
3. ADHD is not treatable:
