5 Ways to Celebrate Family Wellness Month When Everyone is Busy

May 8, 2023 | Relationship

Family Wellness Month is a great reminder to focus on the importance of physical and emotional well-being. As a mental health professional, I have seen firsthand the positive impact that prioritizing wellness can have on families. However, I know that getting everyone on board can be a challenge. In this article, I’ll share some tips and tricks for celebrating Family Wellness Month that can help even the most skeptical family members.

My own journey to prioritizing family wellness started when my husband and I realized we were constantly stressed and exhausted. We were juggling work, kids, and household responsibilities, and there was no time left for ourselves or each other. We knew that something needed to change, but we didn’t know where to start.

After some research, trial-and-error, and asking opinions of others, we found that these five strategies were the most effective for us:

1.  Make Time for Active Play:

Despite being busy, schedule time for physical activities that everyone can enjoy together, such as going for a family walk or playing a game of basketball in the backyard. This not only improves physical health but also provides an opportunity for quality family time.

2. Prioritize Sleep

Make sure everyone in the family is getting enough sleep. Being busy should not be an excuse to sleep less. Sleep is very important not only for your physical health but also mental health. Encourage healthy sleep habits such as setting consistent bedtimes and avoiding screen time before bed.

3. Practice Mindfulness:

Incorporate mindfulness practices into your family routine, such as taking deep breaths together before meals or practicing a guided meditation before bed, even if you have a lot on your plate. Including this in your routine can help you and your family be relaxed especially when you are busy.

4. Eat Healthily:

Being busy can lead us to eat fast food only but this shouldn’t be the case. Plan healthy meals and snacks ahead of time as a family. Encourage everyone to try new foods and make nutritious choices.

5. Communicate Openly:

Encourage open and honest communication within the family. Make time for regular family meetings or check-ins where everyone can share their thoughts and feelings. Take note of it in your busy schedule so you don’t forget your family meetings.

Remember, every family is different, and what works for one may not work for another. The most important thing is to prioritize wellness in a way that feels sustainable and enjoyable for your family. If you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Mental health professionals are here to support you on your journey.
