What is therapy?
Is it for the weak?
Is it for the wickedly elite?
Is it for the majority culture?
Perhaps it is for those that are “crazy”?
As therapists, one of the greatest challenges that we are greeted with is the debate as to why therapy should be a part of one’s standard wellness.
“I don’t need therapy. I can talk to my friend for free.”
Another favorite of mine is “All is well once I take these drinks to the head.”
One that I am most familiar with is “If you are solid in your faith, then you will not need a therapist. If you cannot work through your problems with the help of our Lord Jesus Christ, you are the problem. God can fix it. Give your worries and struggles to Him, for He cares for you.”
Then you do it right? You know you give it to God. Well, you try to give it to God. I mean, you REALLY put forth your best efforts to trust God to relieve you of these thorns. In giving your anxiety, addiction, depression, chronic illness, trauma, abuse, eating disorder, anger, parenting challenges, dysfunctional family, sketchy boss, unfaithful mate to God, you find that it becomes The Tar Baby to you. As a result of your constant efforts and even more constant failures, you find both your mental and spiritual health are nose-diving.
“What is wrong with me?” Yes, this is a question that we ask ourselves regularly. Spoiler alert: There is nothing wrong with you. Didn’t you know? God uses therapists to execute His perfect plan of healing and wholeness for His children, too.
The purpose of therapy is to help one to manage through the challenges and pits of distress. “Does it make me weak?” No, therapy is an act of bold, brazen, courageous commanding of one’s healing and wholeness.
“Surely it is just for the rich.” Nope, this too is a myth. The same insurance plan you use to take care of your medical and dental exams most likely has money for mental health services.
