“You’re getting old; you better start dating.”

“Every day, there are fewer fish in the sea. Don’t get complacent.”

During family gatherings, our family members always say these lines to our single family members. Sadly, this is where most people base their relationships. What they didn’t know, this is all wrong.

Understanding the True Purpose of Relationships

5 Common Misconceptions about Relationships

The true purpose of a relationship is deeper than this. To better understand this, let’s look at 5 common misconceptions about relationships:

1. The key to not being alone is relationships.

Some people use relationships just to be with someone. As a result, you’ll have an unhealthy relationship because you only look at your partner as an object.

2. Relationships will always make us complete.

One common misconception is that being single or not in a relationship will leave you incomplete. Relationships should not make you complete. Relationships are about sharing your completeness with the other person.

3. Relationships can keep us safe.

Yes! Although relationships can provide you with a feeling of safety, completely relying on the person involved in your relationship can only lead to an imbalance of power.

4. We can’t understand ourselves without relationships.

It’s not a good idea to depend on others to understand yourself. You must do it yourself if you want to know and learn more about yourself.

5. Mental health problems can be cured by relationships.

It can be true in a way, but it can also be the opposite. Sometimes, your relationship may be the cause of some mental health problems.

These are just a few of the common misconceptions about the true purpose of relationships. Understanding these can help you better understand the purpose of relationships.
